The History of Liberty Baptist Church
In December of 1952 a small group of 29 believers met to determine the need for a new Church in College Park, Georgia.
During January and February of 1953, this group of 29, unified in its vision, mission and purpose, purchased 13-7/10 acres of land containing a small cement and brick building with a pump on West Fayetteville Road for $6,000.
The name Liberty Baptist Church was submitted by Myra Padgett and unanimously adopted.
On February 25, 1953, the original charter of Liberty Baptist Church was signed by 81 members.
Educational space was added and a 250 seat worship center was completed and dedicated in February, 1965.
An aggressive and successful Bus Ministry was launched in 1973.
A 12,000 square foot educational and recreational building was completed in 1974.
Nationally known evangelistic Bible conferences became a reality. For the next four years, thousands of people sat under the preaching and teaching of great men and women of God, such as R. G. Lee, Peter Lord, Ms. Bertha Smith and many others. God’s hand at work was evident throughout these conferences as many lives were saved and added not only to the Liberty family but also to other local congregations. During this time, Liberty ranked 22nd in baptisms in the state of Georgia and was recognized as one of the fastest growing Sunday Schools in the Georgia Baptist Convention.

In 1979, Liberty purchased 15 acres of land in north Fayette County. Like any journey, there were detours, wrong turns, unexpected roadblocks and delays. Liberty’s journey was no exception, however, it eventually took Liberty southward out of College Park into Fayette County to occupy the land purchased 9 years earlier.
In May of 1988, Liberty traveled to its current location, claimed the land God had planned, broke ground, and began construction of a $1.5 million building. In January 1989, worship services began in Fellowship Hall. The Worship Center and first wing of educational space were dedicated to God’s glory on May 7, 1989.
In August of 1990, the South Wing (for Children and Youth) was dedicated making a total of 30,000 square feet of space with a property value between $1,750,000 and $2,000,000.
Liberty’s journey made yet another turn as we became involved in International and domestic missions endeavors. In 2002 Liberty joined with over 1,000 churches nationwide for the first satellite telecast of 40 Days of Purpose, a spiritual journey . The Liberty family was challenged and invited to participate in a biblical based expansion and renovation of its facilities through a Chest of Joash campaign which was completed in 2003 at a cost of $284,898.
As in 1953, the people of Liberty continue to be inspired by God to work while it is day, "for the night cometh when no man can work." (John 9:4) The challenge is before us to continue having a great spiritual impact in our community and world in this new century. We will continue being a culturally diverse congregation devoted to bridging all racial, social, and economic barriers while remaining generationally diverse in order to reach, teach, and disciple our community for Jesus Christ.
